Description:

Blade front and ladder rear sight. Modern three-groove rifled barrel with right side bayonet lug, and a 2 1/2 inch separate breech section. Mississippi rifle brass front and rear barrel bands. "E. WHITNEY" marked lock. Pattern 53 screw escutcheons. Original period trigger guard and buttplate, and all other components are reproductions. Inside of the stock channel below the barrel is stamped "BLT FOR JOHN D. MCAULAY CIVIL WAR ARMS HISTORIAN & AUTHOR BY F.C. LEWIS PR. WM. CO. VA. 1995". Left stock flat marked with a circled cartouche "FCL" (F.C. Lewis). This musket appears to be built in the style of a Whitney "Good and Serviceable Arm" in which Eli Whitney would buy up inexpensive leftover surplus musket parts from Springfield, Harpers Ferry, Robbins & Lawrence, and Europe, and combine them with leftovers from his Model 1841 contracts to assemble various configurations of muskets to sell to states and private militias at a discount price from the mid-1850s through the Civil War years.

Rating Definition:

Fine, retaining 98% professionally restored brown finish with some light handling marks. Stock is excellent with some light handling marks, and a small scratch on the left flat and left side behind the rear barrel band. Mechanically excellent.
