Description:

Daniel Goff of London was a gunmaker to the East India Company c. 1779-1839. The East India Company used the short Model 1771 (Windus Pattern) muskets to arm their infantry in the late 18th century. Some of these muskets were taken from an East India Company ship captured by American privateers. The Smithsonian included one of these muskets in their "On the Water" exhibit as part of a discussion of American privateers attacking East India Company ships during the War of 1812. The Royal Army also adopted the "India Pattern" in 1797. It has a bayonet stud/front sight, the East India Company heart logo on top of the barrel along with "GOFF 1779," London proof and view marks flanking a "*/DG" maker's mark on the left at the breech, "1779" over the East India Company heart logo on the tail of the lock and "GOFF" at the center, brass furniture, East India Company cartouche on the right side of the butt, and a socket bayonet.

Rating Definition:

Good with mottled brown patina on the lock and barrel along with some mild pitting near the vent, worn down lug/front sight, partially faded barrel markings, repaired or replaced cock, signs of heavy use on the frizzen, distinct lock markings, aged patina on the brass furniture, and moderate overall wear. The stock is fair and has sections absent from the forend, tape around the mid-section, some cracks, and general scratches and dings. Mechanically fine. The bayonet is good and has dark brown patina and moderate wear.
