Description:

The maker’s records confirm that this fine rook rifle was sold in 1887 to a Mr. I.M. Rogers. With blued round barrel with full length matted sighting flat, signed “CHARLES LANCASTER. 151. NEW BOND ST. LONDON.” and “NON-FOWLING SMOOTH OVAL BORE RIFLING”, with non-selective ejector, and fitted with a bead front sight and rear sight of one standing notch sight and two folding leaves graduated to “150” yards and each with platinum inlaid center line. The left barrel bolster engraved “.295 C.F.”. Casehardened border and scroll engraved rounded action with blued toplever. Casehardened border and scroll engraved rebounding back action lock. Blued trigger guard, butt plate and casehardened pistol grip cap each engraved en suite. Well figured walnut semi-pistol grip stock with checkered grip and snap forearm, the latter with dark horn cap, and a blank silver oval initial escutcheon to the underside of the butt. The underside of the barrel struck with London black powder proof marks. Provenance: The Malcolm King Collection

Rating Definition:

Fine. The barrel retaining 98% older reblued finish with crisp signatures, matting slightly softened, some handling wear to the finish at the muzzle. Action with crisp engraving and retaining 30% original faded casehardened finish with some handling wear, the lock with 60% original casehardened finish. Trigger guard with traces of finish, butt plate retaining much reblued finish. Stock showing a good figured pattern with well defined checkering, some scattered age related storage and handling blemishes and marks. Mechanically excellent.
