This rare double rifle was completed in circa 1898 and is chambered for the .500/.450 No.1 Express (Nitro for Black Powder) cartridge. With blued barrels respectively engraved “GREENER’S WROUGHT STEEL” and “AMMUNITION No.1 EXPRESS”, and with blued single extractor. Flat matted rib ramped at the front and rear sights and signed “W.W. GREENER. 68. HAYMARKET. LONDON.” at the breech end toward the rib extension. Blued rear sight of one standing notch sight and two folding notch leaf sights each with platinum inlaid center line and graduated to 300 yards, the front sight formed as a bead. Treble grip action signed “W.W. GREENER” on each side, with Greener cross bolt, blued toplever and blued Greener patent side-mounted safety catch with inlaid “SAFE”. Blued trigger guard engraved “GRADE R.E.T.30” on the tang. The whole engraved with beaded borders and roping on the bolsters. The underside of the barrels and the water table with Birmingham nitro proof marks and Greener “Elephant” trademarks. Figured 14 inch semi-pistol grip stock with checkered dark horn buttplate, checkered grip and forearm, the former with casehardened grip cap, the latter with blued Anson push button release. The underside of the butt with blank oval initial escutcheon and sling eye, the corresponding sling eye fitted beneath the barrels. Weight 8 lbs. 8 oz. In brass cornered leather case lined in blue baize, the lid with printed Greener trade label. Containing a leather pouch for a cleaning kit. The exterior with remains of E.J. Churchill storage label. In fine condition. The barrels retain 98% older reblued finish with slight muzzle rub and some thinning to a plum color, signature, rib matting and breech engraving clear and crisp. Action retaining 70% original faded casehardened finish, grey patina to thinned areas, signatures clear and crisp. Trigger guard retaining 30% original blued finish. Stock with well figured wood, well defined checkering and scattered storage and handling marks and bruises, mostly old. Mechanically excellent. Case in good condition, some age wear to lining, exterior straps replaced.
