Description:

Winchester proof steel chopper lump barrels with dual white bead sights on the matted vent rib marked "CUSTOM BUILT BY WINCHESTER", 3 inch chambers with ejectors, and chokes marked "FULL"/"IMP-MOD". The blued receiver features Winchester's 21-2 pattern engraving light scrollwork and a mallard in flight over a marsh in an oval on the underside. Gold plated single selective trigger and an automatic tang mounted safety switch. The trigger guard is engraved with the initials "E/W/M". Beautifully figured, multi-point checkered walnut beavertail forend with engraved fitting, rotary latch release, and rosewood tip insert and pistol grip stock with Monte Carlo comb, blued steel grip cap, and leather wrapped recoil pad. The included factory letter confirms the current configuration listed above, with the exception of the white front bead (originally red), when the final inspection was completed on January 18, 1955, which is likely a typo and meant to be 1956 as the inspection was started December 16, 1955. No information on whom the initials "E/W/M" identify was provided, however, they could possibly be the initials of Ernest William McFarland. McFarland was a life long Arizona politician and veteran of the U.S. Navy. He served in WWI and later became a state legislator, governor, and Chief Justice of the Arizona Supreme Court. This gun (if it were his) was produced in the middle of his career. Barrel and stock measurements (R/L): bores 9 inches from the breech .732/.731 inches; choke constriction .036/.017 inches; minimum wall thickness .030/.035 inches; 1 1/2 inch drop at comb; 2 inch drop at heel; 14 1/4 inch length of pull; weight 7 lbs 14 oz.

Rating Definition:

Very fine, retaining 95% refinished blue, light handling evidence, and some scratches and thinning on the underside of the action. There is a crack in the forearm tip insert, scattered small scratches, and a few nicks on the comb, otherwise the refinished wood is very fine with sharp checkering on the wrist and crisp checkering on the forearm. Mechanically excellent.
