Blue, Winchester Proof steel barrels with dual white bead sights on matted, solid rib marked "CUSTOM BUILT BY WINCHESTER FOR J. SHOFNER", 3 inch chambers with ejectors, and chokes marked "IMP-CYL"/"MOD". The barrels have standard Winchester markings and a wedge of floral scroll engraving extending 3 1/2 inches toward the muzzle at either breech. Blued action has been non-factory upgraded with Winchester's 21-6 pattern engraving, featuring fine floral scroll work and four game oval scenes. The left side of the receiver shows a setter with a mountain background, the underside shows a pair of pheasant taking off from a field, the triggerguard shows a bust of a dog, and the right shows a pointer in a field. Beautiful, highly figured, Winchester 21-B fluer-de-lis checkered beavertail forearm with engraved fitting, rotary latch release, and ebony tip insert and pistol grip stock with engraved grip cap, gold inscription oval, and Winchester red rubber recoil pad. Included with the gun is an extra set of 26 inch, .410 bore barrels with vent rib marked "CUSTOM BUILT BY WINCHESTER FOR J. SHOFNER", 3 inch chambers with ejectors, and "IMP-CYL"/"MOD" chokes. The extra barrels have been renumbered and upgraded to match the gun. The included Cody Firearms Museum letter confirms the barrel length, chokes, and stock type when the final inspection was completed in September of 1966. The letter also confirms the 21-B stock carving and states that there is no name in the rib panel and does not mention any engraving other than "CUSTOM GRADE". The gun then does have "CUSTOM BUILT BY WINCHESTER FOR J. SHOFNER" on the rib when it is returned for repair on August 24, 1967. This likely means that the gun had begun to be upgraded in this time. This seems to have been a thought out decision made by Shofner as the stock was carved at the factory. Barrel and stock measurements for the main set (R/L): bore measured 9 inches from the breech .616/.616 inches; choke constriction .007/.009 inches; minimum wall thickness .028/.029 inches; 1 1/2 inch drop at comb; 2 3/8 inch drop at heel; 14 inch length of pull; weight 6 lbs 2 oz.

Very fine as upgraded, retaining 99% factory quality refinished blue finish with some minor handling evidence and faint plum coloration on the action and the fittings of both forearms. The wood is also very fine with imperfect inletting for the lower tang, a few minor marks, and crisp checkering. The extra .410 barrel set is also very fine as upgraded. Mechanically excellent.
