Description:

The Model 1795 is historically significant as the first official standardized U.S. martial arm and the first firearms manufactured at the U.S. armories. The Model 1795 was based on the French Model 1766 widely used during the Revolution, and was the main infantry arm of the War of 1812. Springfield Model 1795 Type I muskets are described on pages 35-42 of George D. Moller's book "American Military Shoulder Arms, Volume II", with this exact musket photographed on page 35. This early production musket has the correct Type I features for the 1795-1798 period with no date on the buttplate and lack of barrel proof markings. It has the first style of lock marking with "SPRINGFIELD" in a vertical curve behind the hammer, and at the center of the lock is the shielded eagle looking to it's right (faint) above a script "US" (faint). Note the distinctive curls on the frizzen toe and top jaw guide used on the Type I muskets. Modern replacement metal ramrod. "GDM" (George D. Moller) collection initials marked at the toe of the stock. Includes socket bayonet, leather sling, and wood tampion. Provenance: The George Moller Collection

Rating Definition:

Good as reconverted to flintlock configuration with smooth brown and gray patina overall, and some light pitting. The tang exhibits draw file marks and the breech area is heavily pitted. Stock is also good as lightly refinished with various cracks, repaired sections, and general overall wear. Mechanically fine. Included bayonet is good with brown patina and scattered mild pitting. This rare example of an early Springfield Model 1795 flintlock musket is the first U.S. government manufactured primary issue shoulder arm, and is the missing piece to any complete U.S. martial collection!
