Description:

"MASS" marked on top of the front of the receiver. Blued barrel, receiver, hammer, trigger guard, buttplate and barrel band. Casehardened breech block and receiver tang. Left side breech end of barrel marked with "V/P/eagle head" proofmarks. Low arch breech block marked "US/MODEL/1884". The lock plate is marked with the American eagle next to "U.S./SPRINGFIELD". The heel of the buttplate is marked "US". The oil finished walnut stock is marked with the boxed "SWP/1888" final inspection cartouche on the left wrist. A "T" over a circled "P" is stamped in the grip area. The rifle has a hooded blade front and Buffington rear sight, two-piece trigger guard and trigger bar assembly, serrated trigger, iron cleaning rod and smooth buttplate with no trapdoor. Includes reproduction leather sling, and period leather sling (ripped).

Rating Definition:

Very fine, retains 85% thinning original blue finish with scattered patches of mild surface corrosion concentrated mostly at the left of the breech end of the barrel, rear barrel band and on the buttplate. 80% darkened original case colors on the breech block with scattered light freckling. Stock is also very fine with scattered light scratches, handling marks, and a crisp cartouche. Mechanically excellent.
