Description:

Manufactured between 1860 and 1868. The sideplate is inscribed "R.S. Chew/U.S.N." for Robert S. Chew who was the aide to Secretary of War William H. Seward who served under Lincoln early in the war. Chew was tasked with discovering the fate of Fort Sumter at the onset of the war under direct orders from Lincoln and Seward. Chew worked for the State Department for 40 years and rose to the position of Chief Clerk.

Rating Definition:

Very fine, retaining 90% original silver plating, traces of the original blue in the protected areas, some spotting, and mild handling evidence. The wood is also very fine with mild wear. Mechanically excellent.
