Description:

Around 10,000 of these were manufactured in three major variations for the U.S. government around 1801-1809. This is a Type III with rounded brass flash pan and evenly rounded rear point of the lock plate. Whitney Type III 1798 muskets are described on pages 160-163 of George D. Moller's book "American Military Shoulder Arms, Volume II", with this exact musket photographed on pages 160 and 161. The lock is marked "U.STATES." in a vertical arch at the tail and "eagle/NEW HAVEN." at the center. "V" marked bayonet stud on top of the barrel, brass blade front sight is fitted to the rear of the upper barrel band, and a condemnation mark at the breech. Sling swivels are fitted to the middle band and a stud on the finial of the trigger guard. A faint large circled "US/ORR" (Robert Orr) inspection cartouche is marked on the left stock flat. Initials "J+T+R" carved on the left of the buttstock. "GDM" (George D. Moller) collection initials marked at the toe of the stock. Includes US socket bayonet (will not properly mount), leather sling, and wood tampion. Provenance: The George Moller Collection

Rating Definition:

Good with areas of brown patina, file marks on tang, mild pitting, and sharp lock markings. Stock is also very good with scattered light dings and dents, an absent section of wood visible behind the flash pan, a minor scuff at the left tip of the comb, a hairline crack at the left of the buttplate, and a small chip at the toe. Mechanically fine. Included bayonet is good with mild pitting.
