Description:

This musket is one of around 1,885 believed delivered under a 3,500 gun contract with the state of Connecticut by Ethan Stillman of Burlington, Connecticut, based on the Springfield "Model 1795" Charleville pattern muskets. They are often referred to by collectors as Model 1808s. Ethan Stillman 1808 contract muskets are described on pages 204-205 of George D. Moller's book "American Military Shoulder Arms, Volume II", with this exact musket photographed on page 205. The left of the barrel at the breech is marked with two oval proofs containing what is attributed as three clusters of grapes as in the Connecticut state seal. Marked "S.CT./E. STILLMAN" at the center of the lock. "GDM" (George D. Moller) collection initials marked at the toe of the stock. Includes socket bayonet, leather sling, and wood tampion. Provenance: The George Moller Collection

Rating Definition:

Very good with mild flash pitting, a crack on the right of the bottom jaw, and scattered light surface oxidation and pitting. Stock is also very good with scattered scratches and dents and an absent sliver on the right of the barrel tang. Mechanically fine. Included bayonet is in matching condition.
