Description:

Eli Whitney second and third Connecticut contract muskets are described on pages 207-208 of George D. Moller's book "American Military Shoulder Arms, Volume II", with this exact musket photographed on both pages. The book states, "In February 1810, Whitney contracted with Connecticut to furnish 700 muskets at $12.50 each. These muskets were delivered by May 11, 1811. In May 1811, Whitney again contracted to provide another 700 muskets. These muskets were delivered in 1812. Their configuration was the same as for the muskets delivered by Whitney under his New York state contract... The stock's left breech flat is stamped with the Connecticut state shield, which contains three clusters of grapes [faint on this example]." Features include a bayonet stud on top, brass blade front sight on the rear part of the front barrel band, and "eagle/NEW HAVEN" marked at the center of the lock. "GDM" (George D. Moller) collection initials marked at the toe of the stock. Includes socket bayonet, leather sling, and wood tampion. Provenance: The George Moller Collection

Rating Definition:

Very good with dark brown patina overall, mild flash pitting at the breech, and scattered mild dings on the rear of the barrel. Stock is also very good with numerous scattered moderate pressure dents on left side of buttstock, scratches and chips. Mechanically fine. Included bayonet is fine.
