Description:

Styled directly after the French Model 1763 Charleville pattern, this is one of 20,000 muskets made by approximately 18 makers for Pennsylvania state militia issue, authorized by the Legislative Act of 1797. This particular musket was manufactured under Edward, James, and Owen Evans 1801 contract with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. This exact Pennsylvania contract Evans musket is photographed and described on page 253 and 254 of George D. Moller's book "American Military Shoulder Arms Volume II". "EVANS/CP" marked at the rear of the lock, the "CP" denoting ownership by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. All fittings are iron including the ramrod which has a trumpet style head. Bayonet lug on top of the barrel towards the muzzle, brass blade front sight on the rear strap of the front barrel band. Sling swivel beneath the middle barrel band and ahead of the trigger guard. "28th Regt" above what appears to be a double stamped "6" ahead of "No 23" marked in large letters in the left of the buttstock. "GDM" (George D. Moller) collection initials marked at the toe of the stock. Includes U.S. inspected leather sling. Provenance: The George Moller Collection

Rating Definition:

Good with dark brown patina overall with scattered light to mild pitting. Middle band retainer has a broken tip. Stock is also good with scattered light handling marks and dents cracks, two holes in the left flat, and a chip behind the barrel tang. Mechanically fine.
