The accompanying factory letter confirms this Model 1876 as a carbine chambered in .45-60 caliber and that it was received in the warehouse on December 9, 1885 and shipped on January 28, 1886. Manufactured as a third model with dust cover guide rail integrally machined as part of the receiver and dust cover with rear serrations. It shows standard Winchester markings including the caliber marking on the bottom of the cartridge elevator and has carbine blade front and "1876" marked folding ladder rear sights, saddle ring attached to the left side of the receiver, correct musket style forearm and solid carbine buttplate.
Good. The barrel has turned mostly to a smooth brown patina, otherwise the metal surfaces have a mottled gray patina. Magazine tube internals are absent. The reoiled oversize period replacement wood is also good with a couple hairline stress cracks in the wrist and minor dings and scratches. Mechanically excellent.
