Highly Desirable, Very Scarce Texas Shipped Black Powder Colt Single Action Sheriff's Model Revolver with Factory Letter, Holster and Sioux Falls, South Dakota Marshal Badge

The accompanying factory letter confirms the Sheriff's Model configuration, 4 inch barrel in .45 caliber, blue finish and hard rubber stocks. The revolver was shipped to J.S. Dunlay Hardware Co. of Houston, Texas, on September 15, 1898 as part of a two gun shipment. In "A Study of the Colt Single Action Army Revolver," only around 1,000-1,200 of these "ejectorless" revolvers were estimated to have been manufactured with the majority of the production occurring before 1900 (page 69). Per Keith Cochran in "Colt Peacemaker Encyclopedia, Volume 1," only 494 out of a grand total of 1,000 "ejectorless" SAAs were manufactured with a 4 inch barrel (page 370). The top of the barrel has the two-line address, "45 COLT" is marked on the left side of the barrel, and the left side of the frame has the two-line patent dates marking along with a circled Rampant Colt. Matching serial numbers are on the frame, trigger guard, and back strap. Includes a floral tooled open top leather holster decorated with a metal star and a Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Town Marshal badge. No documentation accompanies the aforementioned accessories. Provenance: The Buckstix Collection

ConditionVery good. Slight traces of original blue finish and silvered out case colors in the protected areas, otherwise the revolver has a mottled gray patina and some light-mild pitting. The grips are also good with wear to the checkering. Mechanically functions fine. The holster is very good. A rarely encountered antique, Texas shipped, "ejectorless" black powder frame Colt Sheriff's Model Single Action Army Revolver.
