Description:

This is an extremely rare example of a second year production U.S. Harpers Ferry Model 1795 Type I musket. This model was the first to be produced at the newly established Virginia arsenal and was utilized in the United States' 19th century conflicts, including the War of 1812 and Civil War. Harpers Ferry Model 1795 flintlock muskets are described on pages 62-73 of George D. Moller's book "American Military Shoulder Arms Volume II", with this exact musket photographed on pages 65, 66, 67, and 69. The lock has the standard Harpers Ferry markings including "HARPERS/FERRY/1801" at the rear, and "eagle/US" at the center. Marked with "eagle/P" and circled "US" proofs at the left of the breech. Serial "No382" is marked on the left of the barrel at the breech and on the buttplate tang. Other features include a bayonet lug on the bottom of the barrel near the muzzle, brass blade front sight on the rear strap of the front barrel band, sling swivels on the middle band and ahead of the trigger guard, and a trumpet head ramrod. Inverted "II W" and "JB" carved into the left of the buttstock. "GDM" (George D. Moller) collection initials marked at the toe of the stock. Includes US socket bayonet, leather sling, and wood tampion. Provenance: The George Moller Collection

Rating Definition:

Good with smooth gray/brown patina surfaces, scattered dark spots of surface corrosion, mild flash pitting, and mostly defined markings in the metal. Stock is also good with scattered scratches and dents, small chips at the rear of the lock, a chip at the rear of the side plate, and a crack visible on the right of the buttplate. Mechanically fine. Included bayonet is also good with scattered mild pitting.
