Description:

Similar Germanic crossbows are known to be dated to the mid 18th century although it is difficult to declare this example to be one of these with any degree of certainty. The iron prod is wrapped in green tinted cord and has a natural toned bow string and fastening cord. It features an adjustable folding peep sight, iron trigger guard, and double set triggers with a long iron plate extending forward. The tiller design is similar to those used on Germanic wheellock sporting guns and is inlaid with staghorn with various engraved designs that primarily consist of floral and shell patterns but also incorporates an estate on the cheek rest edge. The stock also has scroll carving on the front of the cheek piece.

Rating Definition:

Very good with dark patina on the iron, one end of the bow string broken, generally distinct engraving on the staghorn inlays, and mild wear. The set triggers function, but the release appears to be frozen. This is definitely an interesting and attractive antique sporting crossbow.
