Description:

This high quality double flintlock shotgun has Birmingham silver hallmarks on the heel plate for 1817. Fitted with browned Damascus barrels with concave rib with silver front sight and signed “LONDON” in gold towards the breech end. Recessed patent breeches each with two gold inlaid lines, a platinum inlaid line and gold lined touch hole. Standing breech with sighting groove and finely engraved with foliage, a Labrador at rest and a small game bird in flight, the forward edge of the sighting groove engraved with a sunburst extending onto the rib section of the patent breeches. Flat beveled locks each signed “T. KETLAND & CO.” and with blued frizzen spring, roller, gold lined rainproof pan, pierced cock and stepped tail. The locks each engraved with border lines of running foliage, a sunburst, and a dog and two game birds in flight behind the cock. Well-figured walnut half-length stock with raised cheekpiece, fine multipoint checkered grip and small shaped blank silver initial escutcheon inset at the wrist. Full silver furniture comprising scrolled pistolgrip trigger guard with large bow engraved with a panel scene involving two dogs flushing game birds and with pineapple finial, heel plate engraved with flowerheads, foliage and a trophy, plain shaped barrel key escutcheons, and ramrod entry pipe engraved with further foliage. With brass mounted ramrod with worm. The underside of the barrels each marked “STUBS TWISTED” and struck with Birmingham proof marks.

Rating Definition:

Fine. The barrels retains nearly all of their professionally rebrowned finish with unblemished gold inlay on the rib. Breeches with faint traces of original casehardened finish to the underside, exposed surfaces with some age related handling marking and light corrosion spotting, inlaid bands and touch holes in very good condition. Standing breech and locks each with a grey patina, some scattered patches of light surface corrosion marking, most noticeable on the right hand lock plate where is partially obscures the signature, engraving crisp throughout. Stock with pleasing figure pattern, checkering in good condition with little signs of handling wear, scattered age related storage and handling blemishes, marks and bruises throughout. The right face of the butt has two filled knot holes. Silver furniture in very good condition with only the slightest age related softening to the engraving. Overall a great example of a classic English double flintlock shotgun with the added benefits of silver furniture and being of a slightly more substantial size than usually encountered.
