Description:

Dutch Type IV flintlock muskets are described on pages 395-399 of George D. Moller's book "American Military Shoulder Arms Volume I" with this exact musket pictured on pages 395, 397, and 398. The first picture caption on page 395 states, "The salient identifying features of Dutch (Type IV) muskets and carbines and [are] convex-surfaced lock plates and cocks, brass furniture, and the barrel retained by either three or four barrel bands. The rearward extension of the lower portion of this example's upper band has been eliminated subsequent to original manufacture." The picture caption on page 398 states, "The convex surfaced brass side plates of Dutch (Type IV) muskets have a distinctive reverse 'S' shape, with a circular disc at the front." The barrel has faint remnants of what is likely the marking "GENERALITEIT" which refers to Dutch government ownership for the land service (reference page 399 of Moller's Volume I book for a similar example pictured). The furniture is all brass with an iron ramrod pipe. "V=6114" marked on the circular brass plate on top of the wrist. "GDM" (George D. Moller) collection initials marked at the toe of the stock. Includes a later 1911 dated leather sling. Provenance: The George Moller Collection

Rating Definition:

Good, retaining most of the refinished brown finish with scattered moderate pitting and worn barrel markings. Brass fittings retain an attractive bright patina with the front band modified as mentioned above. Stock is also good as sanded and re-oiled with scattered dents and scratches, general overall wear, numerous large cracks and absent sections, and chips behind the barrel tang. Mechanically excellent.
