Description:

Model 1766 muskets such as this one were among the most heavily used firearms by the American rebels to fight the British during the Revolutionary War. Model 1766 infantry muskets are described on pages 336-340 of George D. Moller's "American Military Shoulder Arms, Volume I" with this exact example pictured on pages 336, 337, and 339. This example features a bayonet lug on top towards the muzzle that is 1 1/4 inches behind the muzzle, indicating this was a post-1770 French arsenal modification. Page 337 of Moller's book explains, "The Model 1766 musket was originally fabricated with a 1/4" by 3/16" rectangular lug brazed to the underside of the barrel 1 1/8" behind the muzzle. The modifications of 1770 included relocating this lug to the top of the barrel, 1 1/4" behind the muzzle." Features a brass blade front sight mounted on the rear strap of the upper barrel band, an upside down "star/D" above "Charleville" marked in script at the center of the lock, "star/D" marked at the top left quarter of the breech, "N/star/(illegible)" marked on the S shaped side plate, leather sling swivels mounted on the middle band and trigger guard finial, and a "D" is stamped on the left of the buttstock. Small "GDM" (George D. Moller) collection initials marked at the toe of the stock. Includes a "US" marked socket bayonet and leather sling. Provenance: The George Moller Collection

Rating Definition:

Very good, exhibiting a mix of smooth mottled brown patina overall with some scattered light pitting, moderate flash pitting, and crisp lock markings. Stock is also very good with scattered light scratches and dents, a gouge on the right of the forend, a crack ahead of the rear lock screw and a chip above it, a few chips behind the barrel tang, a mild cracked and repaired section running between the side plate and trigger, a few gouges and chips ahead of the trigger guard finial, and a few minor cracks around the buttplate. Mechanically excellent. Included bayonet is fair with scattered mild pitting.
