Description:

Starting in the 16th Century, canes and walking sticks became extremely popular, first among royalty and nobility, and by the 19th and 20th Centuries having worked their way down to the middle classes as a symbol of status. The handle is an octagonal faceted gold knob with the bust of a Greco-Roman looking man on top bordered by a gold wreath and on the vertical portion alternating facets are decorated with a variety of items including: cornucopia and rake, bird and torch, lute and trumpet, and a bird, bow, and quiver. The musical instruments suggest that this was a musician's cane. All of these are topped with gold floral bunting with floral wreathes in the alternating facets. There are several touch marks around the bottom of the handle. Just below that in the shaft is a hole with gold escutcheons for a lanyard. The shaft is of a light springy wood with an iron ferrule at the tip.

Rating Definition:

Fine, the gold showing mostly bright with minimal handling evidence, the shaft showing some mild crazing throughout, a few scattered minor handling marks, and a few dark spots, with the iron ferrule mostly a smooth plum patina.
