Description:

This is one of approximately 10,000 Model 1816 muskets manufactured at Harpers Ferry in the year 1822. Model 1816 muskets were primarily used in conflicts with various Native American groups after the War of 1812 and were also used into the Mexican-American War era and the Civil War. With the majority of these Model 1816 muskets receiving various alterations to percussion, this example appears to remain in its original flintlock configuration. Model 1816 Type I muskets are described on pages 417-421 of George D. Moller's book "American Military Shoulder Arms, Volume II" with this exact musket pictured on page 418 above the caption, "This Model 1816 (Type I) musket was fabricated at Harpers Ferry Armory in 1822. Its salient visual features are a low stock comb that intersects the wrist about 9 1/2" forward of the butt, a 6 11/16" lock, and a lower sling swivel stud that passes upward through a slot in the trigger guard's front extension." The lock is marked "HARPERS/FERRY/1822" vertically behind the hammer with the eagle and shield motif above "US" marked at the center. "1822" dated barrel tang. Serial number "I/a/92" is marked on top of the breech, "V/P/eagle head" proofs on the left quarter of the breech and "E 18" marked on the left flat of the breech. "IM" inspection initials marked inside the lock along with single digit assembly numbers on various components. "18" marked on the left of the cock. Faint remnants of a circled inspection cartouche and a classification stamp marked on the left stock flat. "N" and "IM" inspection initials marked behind the lower tang. "GDM" (George D. Moller) collection initials marked twice at the toe of the stock. Includes a socket bayonet and period leather sling. Provenance: The George Moller Collection

Rating Definition:

Good with scattered moderate pitting, mottled dark patina, and defined markings in the metal. Stock is also good with scattered scratches, numerous scrapes, dents, and numerous mild chips. Mechanically excellent. Included bayonet is very fine with sharp edges and some light flaking, sling is fine with very light cracking.
