Description:

According to pages 426-433 of George D. Moller's book "American Military Shoulder Arms Volume II," Daniel Nippes manufactured and delivered approximately 4000 of these muskets circa 1877-1840. Almost all of these Model 1816s were converted to percussion and rifled, with this scarce example still in its original flintlock smoothbore configuration. "US/D. NIPPES/PHILa" marked at the center of the lock, "1838" dated at the tail of the lock and on the barrel tang, "US/JH/P" marked at the left of the breech, and a circled script "NWP" (Nahum W. Patch) inspection cartouche marked on the left stock flat. Both of the sling swivels are absent. Includes a US socket bayonet.

Rating Definition:

Very good with mottled brown patina, scattered moderate pitting, and legible markings in the metal. Stock is also very good with numerous scattered scratches, dents, and chips, cracks around the lock and side plate, and a nice cartouche. Mechanically fine. Included bayonet is good with scattered moderated pitting.
