Description:

Reportedly only 50 of these sidehammer "IXL Navy" revolvers are believed to have been manufactured as part of a series of revolvers manufactured circa 1857, possibly by or for Benjamin J. Hart of New York City. Hart's name appears on some IXL revolvers, and some of the pocket model versions are known with "IXL N. YORK" markings which have given the series its name. Quality control is known to have been an issue for these already scarce revolvers further cutting down on the number extant. This revolver is evidence of that given its fractured frame. It has no visible markings aside from the serial number on the underside of the barrel, loading lever, inside of the trigger guard, left side of the toe, and inside of the grips and an "F" on the right side at the toe. The hammer and trigger guard bow are scroll engraved, but the rest of the gun is plain.

Rating Definition:

Very good as period reattached and repaired frame on the front lower edge and rear of the top strap, 75% original blue on the barrel, original case colors remaining primarily on the lever and hammer, mostly gray patina on the balance, some light oxidation/pitting, and general mild overall wear. The grips are very good and have moderate edge wear and numerous mild scratches and dings. The trigger needs help resetting, but the action will function. This is an incredibly rare revolver. We have only sold one other IXL Navy and a few IXL Pocket revolvers.
