This Volcanic Lever Action Carbine was manufactured by the Volcanic Repeating Arms Company c. 1856. The carbine has the distinctive octagon barrel with integral magazine and brass frame and buttplate. The full rib barrel has a pinch-top front sight blade and brass magazine follower. The top barrel flat is roll-stamped with the three-line legend: "THE VOLCANIC/REPEATING ARMS CO./PATENT NEW HAVEN. CONN. FEB.14. 1854." The address has the light strike frequently encountered on Volcanic Repeating Arms barrels. The receiver has a shallow semi-circular cut-out on the front of the ejection port and has a dovetail mounted rear sight with elevation wheel. The hammer spur is hand-knurled. The straight grain walnut stock has a brass buttplate with sharply pointed spur. The serial number is stamped: (1) on the right side of the loading lever, (2) right side of the lower tang beneath the stock, (3) inside of both side plates, and (4) on both toggle links. The assembly number "182" is stamped on: (1) left side of the top receiver tang, (2) buttstock, (3) inside of the buttplate and (4) the shanks of all of the buttplate and tang screws. All of the serial and assembly numbers match. The barrel and integral magazine are blued and the receiver and buttplate are silver-plated. The hammer, trigger and lever are casehardened with mottled, dove-gray, case colors. The cartridge elevator, rear sight and bolt have a fire-blue finish. The stock has a varnished piano finish. The receiver, side-plates and buttplate are factory engraved with the typical Volcanic Repeating Arms arabesque scrolls and feather engraving with scalloped borders. Provenance: The Milan J. Fine. The barrel/magazine retain 50% of the thin blue finish with the balance fading to a plum patina. There are several patches of shallow cloth pattern pitting on both sides of the barrel/magazine. The receiver and buttplate retain 40% of the delicate original silver plating. 40% of the mottled dove-gray case colors are present on the hammer, lever and trigger. The replacement rear sight, cartridge elevator and trigger have 50% of the fire-blue finish. The factory engraving is crisp and the receiver and buttplate show minimal handling wear. The stock has two small hairline cracks near the toe and a three-inch inch crack on the left side of the stock near the buttplate. None of the cracks are significant or detract from the overall fine appearance of the carbine. The stock retains most of the original piano finish and, except for the refinished, repaired cracks on the left side and toe shows minimal handling wear. This is a fine example of a rare and historically significant Volcanic Repeating Arms Company lever action carbine.
