Description:

This No. 1 Rolling Block Sporting rifle was manufactured by E. Remington & Sons circa 1868-1888. It has a single set trigger, dovetail mounted blade front sight, and dovetail mounted fixed Buckhorn rear sight. The heavy octagonal barrel is marked "44 CTG'E" and "S" on the bottom ahead of the smooth forearm. Two-line Remington patent markings marked on the upper tang of the frame with April 17th, 1866 being the latest date. Matching serial number "2131" marked on the underside of the barrel, rear surface of the forearm, front surface of the buttstock, lower tang, and underside of the buttplate. Matching assembly number "26513" marked on the left surface of both the upper and lower tangs. Mounted in a smooth walnut forearm and buttstock.

Rating Definition:

Very good plus as frontier issued and radiant with Western spirit, retains 50% plus original blue finish on the barrel, and patterns of vibrant case colors concentrated on the left of the frame with strong traces elsewhere and scattered heavy brown surface patina on the balance overall. Wood is also very good with scattered scratches and dings from period use, a chipped/absent section at the top right point of the comb, and defined edges. Mechanically excellent. This Remington No. 1 Sporting rifle would make a fine addition to any American or Western arms collection!
