Description:

The left side of the barrel is marked "N.J" indicating this is one of only approximately 1,000 New Model Army revolvers purchased by the State of New Jersey for issue to state militia during the Civil War. The revolver lacks the final inspection cartouches on the grips that were applied to U.S. Contract Remington revolvers, of which the Ordnance Department purchased approximately 106,000, making these New Jersey contract revolvers far more scarce. The revolver has a high polish blue finish on the barrel, loading lever, cylinder and frame. The trigger guard is brass. The hammer is color casehardened. The two-piece grips are varnished walnut. The octagon barrel is fitted with the late style front sight blade. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped "PATENTED SEPT. 14. 1858/E.REMINGTON & SONS.ILION NEWYORK.U.S.A./NEW-MODEL" in three lines. A small "E" is marked on the right breech end of the barrel and right front of the frame, "B" is marked on the left of the trigger guard, and "M" on the left rear of the frame. Serial number "71710" marked on the underside of the barrel and left of the grip frame.

Rating Definition:

Fine, retains 50% plus original high polish blue finish mostly concentrated on the barrel and cylinder with smooth brown and gray patina on the balance, and definitive markings overall. 60% original case colors remain on the hammer. Grips are very good with scattered scratches, some dings on the butt of both grips, a small chip at the top left corner, and some minor chipping at the bottom edges. Mechanically excellent.
