Description:

This Model 3 variant of the Model 1855 revolver series was manufactured in 1861 and has finely detail acanthus scroll engraving with punch-dot backgrounds and track line borders cover approximately half of the metal surfaces that closely follows engraving on the revolver on page 71 of "The Book of Colt Engraving" in the section covering Master Engraver Gustave Young. A banner is engraved around the main serial number on the butt. The top of the hammer carries five dots forward of the knurling which denotes the level of time charged by Gustave Young to Colt. The revolver has the barrel address without the pointing hand motif: "+COLT'S PATENT/1855+" and "ADDRESS COL. COLT/HARTFORD, CT USA+" The cylinder is numbered to the gun and has the cabin and Indian scene. The barrel is also numbered to the gun. The period partitioned case contains an Eley cap tin, "L" shaped combination tool, cleaning rod, double side eagle powder flask, and two cavity bullet mold marked "COLTS/PATENT."

Rating Definition:

Fine, retaining 50% original blue finish with the balance a smooth gray patina. nearly all of the cylinder scene remains. The slightly age shrunken grip is also fine with a slight chip near the toe (left side), minor handling marks and attractive grain aged appearance. Mechanically needs work as hammer does hold at the half cock position. The case is very good with a hairline crack on the lid, minor handling/storage marks, and high spot wear on the lining. The accessories are very good.
