Description:

This 18 1/4 x 14 3/8 inch print features a pile of bones in the foreground, with the Montana prairie stretching as far as the eye can see in the background, along with what appears to be the Little Bighorn River. The print is lightly colorized with watercolors. With the photograph being dated exactly a year after the 7th Cavalry was annihilated at the Battle of Little Bighorn, it is likely that these are the bones of 7th Cavalry and Native American horses that were left on the battlefield. L.A. Huffman's copyright in the lower right corner and "#95B Custers Hill June 26 1877." in the bottom left, both in white ink. The frame measures 26 x 22 inches. Laton Alton Huffman (1854-1931) was among the few photographers to capture nature, Native Americans, and ranching life in Montana in the late 19th century. Many of those photographs were later enlarged and/or colorized.

Rating Definition:

Excellent, the image distinct and color showing very little fading and minimal wear overall. The frame is also excellent with minimal wear and retaining almost all of the gold finish.
