Description:

Beginning in approximately the 16th century, canes gradually became more popular among the upper echelons of society, reaching its pinnacle around the late-19th to early-20th centuries. They became far more than just an accessory to assist with mobility, and more of a symbol of ones status and wealth. The grip of this cane has been impressively carved with a sitting bulldog, a long-time symbol of tenacity and combativeness, a reputation gained early in their lineage due to their involvement in the violent English sport of "bull-baiting". The grip has been inked in areas to give the appearance of spots of darker fur, dark claws, and a red tongue, and it is fitted with large glass eyes. The ebonized hardwood shaft is tipped with a German silver ferrule. It measures 36 3/4 inches overall.

Rating Definition:

Very fine, the grip showing distinct carving and retaining much of the inked finish (rare to find a carving of this quality with so much color remaining), some hairline age cracks, and an attractive antique appearance overall. The shaft is fine and retains almost all of the ebonized finish with some scattered light handling marks.
