Description:

Manufactured after 1865, this retailer marked S&W Old Army has the rare tri-tone finish combination (silver, gold and blue) with a rare original New York-style French fitted case. The special finishes and case were most likely provided to Kittredge & Company by S&W's New York City based and largest distributor, M.W. Robinson. The barrel rib has the desirable Ohio retailer marking "KITTREDGE & CO./CIN.O." as well as the standard S&W address. The cylinder has the one-line patent date marking. Fitted with varnished, smooth, two-piece rosewood grips with the matching serial number stamped on the inside of the right panel. Matching assembly mark "XX7" appears on the grip frame and cylinder. The barrel has the assembly mark "C7." The barrel is plated in silver, the cylinder is plated in gold, and the frame is blued. The period correct French fitted case is by M.W. Robinson Co. of New York City contains a cartridge block with 41 rounds, case key, and rare hickory cleaning rod. Provenance: The Sheryl Cheely Collection

Rating Definition:

Excellent. The barrel retains 98% original silver plating. The frame retains nearly 95% bright original polish blue finish with thinning on the balance. 95% original gold remains on the cylinder. Nearly all original case colors remain on the hammer. The grips are also excellent with some scattered minor handling marks and retaining nearly all original varnish. Mechanically excellent. The case is very good with a number of minor handling/storage marks and high spot wear on the lining. An attractive, rare tri-tone S&W Old Army Revolver with Kittredge & Co. retailer markings and New York case that will be a prized addition to any S&W collection.
