These early percussion pistols from c. 1828 have smoothbore Damascus barrels with silver bead front sights, "JAs WILKINSON & SON, PALL MALL LONDON" signed on top, the serial number and London proof and view marks on the underside as well as "TE" just behind the rib, and casehardened patent breeches with pierced platinum plugs, cleanout screws, and floral engraving. The standing breeches have integral notch rear sights and floral engraving. The locks also have floral and border engraving and are signed "JAs WILKINSON & SON" and have sliding half-cock safeties and bestial designs on the hammers. The spurred trigger guards are blued and also have floral engraving. The forend caps, wedge escutcheons, wrist escutcheons, and pommel caps are silver, and the latter are engraved with shell and scroll patterns and have threaded caps and fairly deep compartments. The stocks have "JN" inside the breech hook cutout and slender flat-sided butts with fine checkering. The wrist escutcheons are inscribed with the motto "SPES DURAT AVORUM" ("the hope of the forefathers lasts" or "the hope of my ancestors endures") in a banner over a crest of a crowned lion passant guardant and torse. These are the motto and crest of the Walmesley family. The case has a blank escutcheon on the lid and has royal blue lining, a Wilkinson trade label, four over-sized lead balls, a ball mold, screwdriver, nipple wrench, mainspring vice, cleaning rod, and a hallmarked sterling silver Dixon & Sons three-compartment powder flask inscribed in ornate script with what appear to be the initials "PSG."

Rating Definition:

Fine with 85% plus bright original high polish blue finish on the trigger guard, 60% original brown and Damascus patterns along the barrel, light patterns of original case colors on the lock, dark aged patina on the silver, some light oxidation, distinct markings and engraving, and generally only minor age and storage related wear. The stock is also fine and has distinct checkering, smooth oiled finish, numerous light dings and scratches, and a thin crack by the lock screw. Mechanically fine. The professionally relined case and accessories are also fine with mild age and storage related wear including an attractive aged patina on the silver.
