Description:

These late percussion dueling pistols are inlaid with "C.F. GALAND/A/PARIS" in gold on the breech sections of the Liege proofed barrels for French gunmaker Charles-Francois Galand (1832–1900) who is most famous for the Galand double action revolver patented in 1868. The rifled barrels have dovetailed blade front sights, complex floral scroll engraving, and fluted mid-sections. The breech plugs and standing breeches have coordinating engraving and "1" (A) and "2" (B) in gold inlay. The locks and furniture also have coordinating engraving, and the stocks have relief carved scroll patterns and are marked "JNI" under the barrels. This marking is often found on Belgian and French pistols from this era with carved ebony stocks. The pistols come in a coordinating ebony case with scroll and border brass inlays on the lid, Galand markings in gilt letters inside the lid, and a compliment of loading and maintenance tools, including a coordinately engraved ball mold, rods for both pistols, a mallet, screwdriver, oiler, and powder flask. The case comes in a rare bound secondary traveling case. Provenance:

Rating Definition:

Fine with most of the period refinished blue remaining on the barrel, mostly smooth French gray on the lock and furniture, crisp engraving, bright gold inlays, mild oxidation concentrated on the bottom of the barrel and nipple, some wear and scrapes on the trigger guard tang, and generally only minor age and storage related wear overall. The stock is very fine and has crisp carving, a small sliver absent by the trigger guard tang on the right, minor scratches, and light overall wear. Mechanically excellent. The wood case and accessories are generally very good with mild age and storage related wear including some hairline cracks in the grain on the lid. The powder flask has an absent spring. The exterior case is also very good and has mild wear, including deterioration of the leather wrapped rope handles.

Rating Definition:

Fine with most of the dark period refinished blue on the barrel, mostly smooth French gray on the lock and furniture, bright original gold inlays, crisp engraving, and general mild wear from age and storage including some patches of oxidation mainly on the underside of the barrel.
