Description:

Ornate 16th and 17th century wheellocks are staples of fine antique arms collections both in the U.S. and abroad thanks to the incredible artistry that went into their production. This highly decorated wheellock is marked "MB" and "1590" on the buttplate. The metal components have no visible markings aside from what appears to be "1.1.5.7.9.K" on the wheel cover just below the pan. The lock has two empty taps but no corresponding holes are in the stock. The lock components have some scroll and mask engraving but the main ornamentation consists of an incredible number of finely shaped and engraved stag-horn/bone inlays along the entire length of the stock in a variety of designs including mythical monsters, a nude goddess on the bottom, various masks, floral patterns, pair of putti on the cheek, and a variety of borders patterns. The smoothbore barrel has a brass blade front sight at the muzzle and a dovetailed groove rear sight near the breech. An iron tipped ramrod is fitted beneath the barrel in an enclosed channel. An "113" marked brass inventory tag is attached to the trigger guard. Provenance: The Tom Lewis Collection

Rating Definition:

Fine with metal with light patina and minor pitting, a tool mark at the breech on the left, and general mild overall wear. The lock needs some work. The stock is also fine and has generally crisp engraving on the inlays, some replacement inlays and discreet repairs, a sliver absent at the muzzle on the left, and small piece absent at the rear of the trigger guard. Sure to be a great statement piece in any antique arms collection.
