Description:

The DWM Luger Carbine was intended as a substitute for the light hunting rifles then available on the market, being highly compact when disassembled and light and easy to maneuver when together. Reportedly Kaiser Wilhelm II favored the Luger Carbine for European medium-sized game, the compact weapon being easier to manage with the handicap of his weakened left arm. Marble #27 beaded blade front sight and sliding rear sight graduated from 100 to 300 meters, with the early pattern recessed bolt and dished toggle knobs with toggle lock mechanism and "DWM" front toggle link. A set of "crown/B" and "crown/U" proofs are present on the barrel, chamber and toggle assembly, and most parts are numbered in the "commercial" pattern. The checkered grips and the wood based nickel finished magazine are unnumbered. A checkered forearm and straight wrist stock are included, the former numbered to match on the interior, with a spring-loaded barrel accelerator and a wedge for mounting to a frame iron, the latter numbered to match on the blued steel mounting iron with a serrated horn buttplate. Included with the grouping is an attractive tooled leather belt scabbard, configured for the pistol, the stock, and an included extra magazine, with fine floral and dove patterns on the face, a basket weave pattern on the rear, and an internal slot for a (not included) cleaning rod; a provided bill of sale from William Drollinger lists a carbine scabbard "of top quality saddle-leather, as made pre-WWII in USA", and while there is not a maker's mark visible it definitely looks like expert work. Also included is a note identifying the pistol, stock and scabbard to the collection of Klaus Meyer, with the exceptional restoration work attributed to Gale Morgan, a walnut stand, and a number of publications on the subject of Lugers and the Luger Carbine, including multiple issues of American Rifleman, The Gun Report, and a vintage Pacific Arms catalog. Provenance: The Klaus Meyer Collection

Rating Definition:

Very fine as professionally restored, with 98% of the high polished blue, showing some light handling marks and edge wear overall. Some light dings and scratches are visible on the very fine wood, with some red spots on the grip panels and crisp checkering overall. The otherwise very fine scabbard shows some light wear on the belt loop and shoulder strap D-rings along with a few areas of lost stitching and mild handling marks, but is solid and supple overall with well executed decoration. Mechanically excellent.
