Description:

This is a fine example of a desirable DWM Model 1900 "American Eagle" commercial Luger pistol. These pistols were the true first commercial contract Luger pistols produced by DWM and can be found in the 2000-19000 serial number range, with this specific pistol falling about half way through the production cycle. These pistols were specifically intended for sales in the U.S. market, hence the use of the American Eagle symbol on top of the chamber area with the DWM markings on the front toggle. This pistol has all the early desirable Luger features, starting with the superb hand fitted parts with the pre-war high polish rust blued finish, the early long frame, dished toggles with toggle lock on the right side, recessed breechblock, 4 3/4 inch fast tapered barrel, grip safety, no stock lug, straw colored small components and bright polished lower safety area. It is correctly serial numbered in the commercial fashion with the serial number under the barrel and on the front of the frame, which is also marked "GERMANY". The magazine is the correct nickel with a wooden base and is unnumbered. Some of the small parts are marked with the partial serial number "25". The pistol is fitted with the smooth Ideal stock walnut grips. Complete with an Ideal combination metal wire stock and leather holster. The Ideal Company in the U.S. patented and manufactured these stocks, and they were developed prior to incorporation of the stock lug on the back of the Luger frame. To attach the stock, each pistol was fitted with a set of the smooth walnut grips with the metal back plate that has cutouts which engage a set of hooks on the front end of the telescoping metal stock. There is a small button on top of the metal frame that allows the stock to be extended an additional 4 inches, giving it an overall length of 14 inches. The center section of the stock has a leather holster to store the pistol, and the backside of the frame has a spring loaded metal belt loop. Both sides of the metal frame are marked "PATENTS PENDING".

Rating Definition:

Fine. The pistol retains 60% original blue finish with muzzle and high edge wear, several small minor scratches on the barrel and a mottled brown and gray patina on the grip straps. 40% of the original straw colors remain on the small components with a smooth gray patina on the balance. The grips are very good with a few minor scratches and dings. The markings are crisp and clear. Mechanically excellent. The stock is very good with 30% original blue, the balance a mottled grayish brown patina on the metal surfaces and some minor oxidation on the upper rail. The fine leather remains supple and shows some minor age cracking, with tight stitching. A nice, solid example of a Model 1900 American Eagle with a scarce Ideal stock.
