Heer in "Der Neue Stockel" lists Johannes Nicolaus Danner as active in Tann, Bavaria, (now in modern day Hesse, Germany) c. 1688-1700. This rifle is described and shown on pages 120 and 121 in the included copy of "European Firearms in Swedish Castles" by Wennberg. It is identified as "Formerly in the armoury of the Grand Dukes of Saxe-Weimer, Etterburg Castle, Saxony." The swamped, octagonal barrel has round bottom, seven-groove rifling as well as additional small grooves on the lands, a beaded border on the upper side flats at the muzzle and breech, a dovetailed brass blade front sight, "1688" ahead of the two-leaf rear sight which has a decorative pierced scroll finial, "IOANNES NICOLAUS DANNER" signed on top of the breech section, pair of "tree/HC" maker's marks on the upper side flats at the breech, and floral engraved tang. The lock has raised relief scroll patterns inhabited by a bird and mask, "IND" ahead of the cock followed by "A TANN" behind the cock, nicely sculpted sub-components, and an internal bridle. The lock is tipped by adjustable set triggers. The rear trigger has a scroll finial, and the trigger plate has a pierced design on the tang. The grip extension style trigger guard has pierced floral finials, heart piercing on the front of the bow, and an overall nice sculpted design. The wrist has an iron escutcheon with a bust surrounded by flush plates with pierced scroll designs and various figures. The pierced, scrolling sideplate has two masks. The patchbox lid and left side of the buttstock have wire inlays, and the cheekpiece has a pierced circular scene with a pelican and canid drinking from vessels and a tree. The buttplate tang is a serpent design. The stock is incredibly figured root-wood and has raised scroll carving.
