Description:

This revolver uses William Tranter's interesting double trigger mechanism. You can fire the revolver in double action, or you can pre-cock the revolver using the lower trigger and then pull the main trigger to fire with a lighter trigger pull closer to firing in single action. If you release the lower trigger without pulling the main trigger, the hammer will come to rest before striking one of the nipples kind of like the cocker/decocker of the H&K P7 PSP pistols. This example has the Third Model rammer with the removable ramming point and was manufactured around the late 1850s to early 1860s in Birmingham. It has a beaded post front sight, integral notch rear sight at the rear of the top strap, Birmingham proofs, a "W. TRANTER'S/PATENT" marked loading lever, "HH" on the left side of the frame below the breech, No 1249.T." on the right side of the frame, scroll engraving, a casehardened cylinder with "84" marked on the rear, and a checkered walnut grip. The wood case has green baize lining, a tin of "W. TRANTER'S/Patent/LUBRICATING BULLETS/EXPRESSLY ADAPTED FOR/W. TRANTER'S/PATENT/Double-Trigger Revolver," another tin of "W. TRANTER'S/PATENT/Lubricating Composition," a Dixon powder flask, Dixon oiler, cap tin, cleaning rod, double cavity brass bullet mold with blued iron sprue cutter marked "38" (38 bore), spare nipples, screwdriver, nipple wrench, and key.

Rating Definition:

Fine with 60% plus original blue finish on the barrel and frame with numerous scattered flaked areas displaying gray and light brown patina, mostly bright loading lever as well as hammer and triggers with some discoloration, 40% original case colors on the cylinder, some light oxidation and pitting, and minor overall wear. The grip is very fine with crisp checkering and minor handling and storage wear. Mechanically excellent. The case and accessories are very good with mild storage wear including some tears on the lining and verdigris on the flask and mold. Overall, a very attractive cased Tranter revolver.
