This Remington New Model Navy revolver features attractive factory engraving with broad floral scrollwork on a punch dot background along with entwining line motifs on the upper barrel flats at the breech and butt, shell type pattern on the back strap shoulder, ornate star burst pattern on top of the frame, and Nimschke star on the bottom of the trigger guard surrounded by an entwining motif. Fitted with smooth two piece grips. In the book "The Guns of Remington", in the 1863-1875 Special Order Revolvers section, page 61 has an engraved New Model Navy (Belt) revolver, serial number 45, that is photographed with some of the same engraving patterns as seen on this revolver. During this period, Remington established a "Special Order Department" for special decoration guns. These guns were embellished with engraving, occasionally etching, platings of "rich" metals and fitted with higher grades of wood or exotic material grips. These guns were serial numbered in a separate series. The top barrel flat has the three-line patent dates/address/New Model marking. Serial number "43" is marked on the left of the grip frame, underneath the barrel, and hand numbered underneath the grips. Master Engraver Louis D. Nimschke's initials "LDN" boldly marked on the left of the grip frame (under the grip). Includes wooden display case, cap tin, bullet mold, powder flask, box of Colt ammunition, and lead balls.

Exceptionally fine, retaining 90% period factory attributed/applied nickel finish on the frame/barrel assembly with a few patches of light freckling, 95% professionally replated gold finish remaining on the cylinder with a light drag line, and crisp engraving throughout. Hammer retains 85% original casehardened colors. Grips are very fine with some light handling marks, a few minor cracks at the edges, and age related cracks at the base. Mechanically fine. Included case is fine with some light scratches and handling marks and general light wear. This is an attractive and exceptional example of a rare Nimschke engraved Remington New Model Navy revolver that would make a fine addition to any Remington or high end engraved American firearms collection!
