The Model 1878 Long Range Rifles were manufactured from October 1877 to May 1880, and production totaled only 230 with a fair amount of variation from rifle to rifle. They are among the finest single shot target rifles ever made and have a reputation for accuracy. This special order rifle is from later in production and is likely chambered for the .45 2 4/10 cartridge (.45-90). It has a windgauge globe front sight, the usual Old Reliable and Bridgeport address markings, nickel plated action with hard rubber "jet" panels, knurled trigger, long ranger Vernier peep sight, multi-point checkered forearm and pistol grip stock (appear to be English walnut), contrasting forend tip, hard rubber grip cap, and a casehardened Swiss buttplate with lightening grooves and holes and a trapdoor compartment and hollowed out buttstock to lighten the weight to 11 lbs. 3.2 oz. Matching numbers are found on the barrel, forearm, and action.

Extremely fine with 85% plus original blue finish on the barrel, 85% plus original nickel plating on the action, light original case colors on the breechblock and buttplate, and minor overall wear. The stock and forearm are very fine and have some attractive grain, light wear on the otherwise crisp checkering, and general minor marks and scratches. Mechanically excellent.
