Description:

This experimental Walter Scott patent breechloading centerfire conversion rifle uses a right side mounted lever to unlock the sideways sliding breechblock, simultaneously ejecting a spent shell casing and allowing for loading at the breech. "WALTER SCOTT 47 St BIRMINGHAM" marked on top of the barrel, "WALTER SCOTT/->o<-/PATENTEE" marked on top of the receiver in reference to Walter Scott and W. J. Matthews' British patent number 138 dated January 13th, 1873. Fixed front and graduated ladder rear sight. "52" with Birmingham Crown proofs marked at the left of the breech end of the barrel. Crisp circular stamp "WALTER SCOTT/47A PRINCIP St/BIRMINGHAM" on the right of the buttstock. A breechloading rifle such as this was very likely intended for military trials.

Rating Definition:

Fine, retaining 40% original blue finish with scattered light to moderate pitting and brown patina on the balance. Brass fittings retain a pleasing golden aged patina. Stock is also fine with scattered light scratches, scattered moderate dents, and some lines in the forend from display. Mechanically excellent.
