Description:

This is a fine original example of a U.S. Rock Island Arsenal Model 1903 rifle which manufactured in early 1913 just prior to the outbreak of World War I. It is marked "R.I.A./flaming bomb/1-13" on top of the barrel just behind the front sight, with "R26/P" on the bottom. The bolt is marked with the steel lot code "C13" on the front of the safety lug. The receiver has the standard markings. Mounted on a smooth walnut straight grip stock with grasping grooves, one reinforcing bolt, a boxed "C.N./1913" cartouche on the left side of the wrist, a script circled "P" proof on the underside of the wrist and a checkered steel buttplate with trapdoor (empty). Includes a Rock Island Arsenal Model 1905 bayonet dated "1906", a leather scabbard stamped "R.I.A./1906./W.K.", and a "H&P.1918" marked leather sling. Provenance: The Steven Preston Military Collection

Rating Definition:

Fine, 50% plus original blue finish remains with some flaking of the oil quenched finish on the receiver showing a mottled gray/brown patina, some high edge wear and some minor spotting. The stock is very fine with scattered minor scratches and dings. Mechanically excellent. The bayonet is fine with some areas of discoloration and mild wear on the scabbard.
