Description:

This Springfield Armory M1 Garand rifle was manufactured in September 1943 and subsequently arsenal modified to M1D configuration. The rifle is fitted with a standard blued M84 2.2 power telescopic sight with post and cross-wire cross-hairs, sliding sun shield, and rubber eyepiece. The stock is fitted with a russet leather cheek-piece stamped "MRT/1 52" on the right side. The rifle has the special M1D barrel with scope mounting block and marked "S-A-9-52" on the right of the chamber. "SA" marked trigger housing, "-12SA" bolt, "SA" operating rod, and T105 rear sight. Boxed "S.A./G.A.W." (George A. Woody) inspection cartouche behind a crossed cannons cartouche stamped on the left wrist and encircled "P" proof mark on the bottom of the pistol grip. The included telescopic sight has a plate on the right side marked "TELESCOPE/M84/SERIAL NO. 18475". This rifle was probably overhauled and assembled to M1D configuration at an Army Ordnance Depot in the 1960s. The M1D was the standard Army sniper rifle from the mid-1950s until the late 1960s. M1D rifles remained in the inventories of some Army National Guard units and Special Forces groups until the early 1990s. Includes an olive drab green canvas sling and "MRT/1 52" leather cheek pad. Provenance: The Steven Preston Military Collection

Rating Definition:

Very fine as arsenal converted to M1D configuration, retains 90% arsenal parkerized finish with some light edge wear and some scattered small patches of very light pitting. The refurbished stock is fine as lightly sanded and re-oiled with some scattered light scratches and a nice mostly visible cartouche. Mechanically excellent. Scope is very good, retains 60% original blue finish with smooth brown patina on the balance, and clear optics. Included cheek piece is fine.
