Description:

This Colonial American assembled Committee of Safety pattern musket is fitted with a French Model 1728 lock, 46 inch long British barrel, and an American Cherry stock with brass fittings in the style of a British Brown Bess. This example follows the pattern requested by the Colony of Connecticut in which they set their standards on April 1775 stating, "Resolved, that the three thousand stands of arms to be procured for the use of this Colony be of the following dimensions, to wit: the length of the barrel three feet ten inches [46 inches], the diameter of the bore from inside three-quarters of an inch... with iron ramrods, a good substantial lock, and a good stock well mounted with brass.." (Harold Peterson's book "Arms and Armor in Colonial America" page 183). "Crown/SE" (Saint Etienne) above "G. DVCHON" marked at the center of the lock, and "CHAPOVION" marked on the inside of the lock. A partial crowned maker's mark, early proofs of the London Gunmaker’s Company on the left quarter of the breech end of the early British barrel. Top mounted bayonet lug towards the muzzle. Iron ramrod. Absent forend cap. Small white painted inventory number "CWT-2005-46" marked underneath the trigger guard.

Rating Definition:

Good with brown patina, scattered moderate pitting, and mostly legible markings in the metal. Brass exhibits an attractive bright patina from an old cleaning. Stock is also good as lightly sanded and re-oiled with scattered scratches, dents, cracks, various small filled in repairs, and attractive figure overall. Absent forend cap as mentioned above. Mechanically does not stay in the cocked position, although the mainspring remains strong. This desirable Connecticut Committee of Safety pattern musket would make a fine addition to any Revolutionary War firearms collection!
