Description:

The right side of the butt has a silver plaque with an engraved bald eagle on top and reading "Awarded to Jacob W. Van Doorn Sergt./by the 7th Company National Guards commanded by/Capt. Charles B. Spicer in the 27th Regt. N.Y.S.A. for/his superior skill at Target Firing Augt 16 1826." The eagle is in a similar attitude to the eagle in the New York National Guard's coat of arms. The smoothbore barrel has a stud front sight and "1826" on the tang. The lock is signed "Sharpe" and has some light engraving. The barrel wedge escutcheons are silver. The other furniture is brass. The side plate has burst patterns, and the trigger guard and buttplate have floral and martial designs. An iron ramrod with brass button tip is included. Captain Charles B. Spicer is listed in the 7th Company, 27th Regiment of New York State Artillery, in 1826 and was the acting captain for part of 1826 and later became a brigadier-general in the First Division. The following year, Jacob W. Van Doorn is listed as a second lieutenant in the 7th Company. Van Doorn also resigned from Fire Company No. 31 in 1827. The 7th was organized into the 27th Artillery in May of 1826. The unit's history records that, "On the 9th of August the non-commissioned officers of the Regiment, under command of Adjutant Warner, proceeded to Stuyvesant Creek for target practice...The field and staff officers fired at the target with pistols for a pair of prize pistols, and the company officers fired with muskets for a prize sword, using for that purpose the muskets of the non-commissioned officers. The prizes for the best marksmen among the non-commissioned officers were presented by the field and staff officer." The annual inspection of the unit took place on the 18th.

Rating Definition:

Very good with silver-gray patina on the barrel and lock, resurfaced frizzen, aged patinas on the silver and brass, mild wear on the engraving on the furniture, and distinct engraving and inscription on the silver plaque. The refinished stock is also very good with a faint repaired crack visible extending from the nose of the lock, some nice figure on the butt, smooth oiled finish, and generally only light handling and storage marks. Mechanically fine. This is a rare and interesting marksmanship award fusil inscribed to an officer in the 7th Company, 27th Regiment of New York State Artillery, in 1826.
