Description:

This carbine was manufactured in 1870 and has a blade front sight on the upper barrel band, two-leaf rear sight, saddle ring on the left, smooth stock and forearm, and brass buttplate. The frame and buttplate have scroll, crosshatch, and floral engraving, and the frame is inscribed "BROQUA/&/SCHOLBERG" on the left and "142 CALLE/RINCON/MONTEVIDEO." This firm was formed by Alfonso Broqua of Montevideo, Uruguay, and Clementine Suyder Scholberg of Liege, Belgium, in 1856. While Winchester's lever actions were popular in the American West, many also went to Central and South America which were politically unstable in the period and had a series of civil and international conflicts. The Paraguayan War (War of the Triple Alliance, 1864-1870) was coming to a close in 1870 and the Revolution of the Lances (1870-1873) was beginning.

Rating Definition:

Good with mottled brown patina on the iron, strong traces period nickel on the brass, aged patina on the balance, dented magazine tube, bulge on the elevator, cracked rear sight, converted bolt, and absent mainspring screw. The undersized, refinished wood is good with moderate wear, some flakes and small chips, and repaired break in the toe. Mechanically fine. This Model 1866 carbine looks like it could tell some stories!
