Description:

Per the consignor, this exceptional Hall Model 1843 carbine came out of the Hall family estate. Approximately 10,500 of these "side lever" Hall Model 1843 carbines were manufactured by Simeon North between 1844-1853. The 1st and 2nd U.S. Dragoons were among the units issued these carbines during the Mexican-American War, and more than half are believed to have been rifled for use in the Civil War, making original smoothbore examples like this scarce. Its western heritage certainly adds to its interest. Features a blade front and V notch rear sight. "U.S/S.NORTH/MIDLtn/CONN./1847" marked breech block. "JH" (Joseph Hannis) inspection initials marked on the left of the breech, boxed script "GWH" (George W. Hamlin) inspection cartouche marked on the left stock flat, and oval script "W.A.T" (William A. Thornton) inspection cartouche marked on the right stock flat. Single letter "H" and "P" inspection initials marked on various components. Provenance: The Hall Family Estate Collection; The David Aroh Collection; The Ron Bucholtz Collection

Rating Definition:

Excellent plus, as issued. Retains 97% lustrous original brown finish with a few light scratches on the barrel, 95% plus original casehardened finish on the breech block with vibrant case colors in protected areas and a muted gray appearance on top, 75% plus original bright nitre blue finish on the lever with smooth brown patina on the balance. Sharp markings in the metal overall. Stock is also excellent plus with attractive original raised grain and rich oil finish, some of the most well-defined edges this writer has ever seen on a Hall carbine, some light handling marks, a small chip on the left underside of the buttstock, and exceptionally crisp cartouches. Mechanically excellent. This exceptional Hall Model 1843 carbine, reportedly right out of the Hall family estate, is one of the finest examples Rock Island Auction Company has ever cataloged; this example would be very difficult to improve upon and would make an excellent addition to any U.S. Martial arms collection!
