Description:

The Model 1850 Foot Officer’s sword was the standard company grade officer's sword from 1850 to 1872 and was manufactured by several companies, particularly during the Civil War when demand was exceptionally high. This sword from the Ames Manufacturing Co. is dated "1861" on the right ricasso below "US/J.H." The 30 5/8 inch long blade has classical martial and patriotic etching and the etched Ames maker's mark. The brass hilt and scabbard fittings are gilded, and the hilt has the usual floral patterns. The grip is wrapped in alternating brass wire and black shagreen. The scabbard body is black leather. The revers of the upper suspension band hat the Ames Mfg. Co. markings.

Rating Definition:

Very good with mild gray patina and distinct etching on the blade, strong gilt finish and aged patina on the hilt and scabbard fittings, moderate age and handling wear on the grip, and some scraped and minor cracking on the leather. Overall, this is a very attractive Civil War Model 1850 Foot Officer's Sword.
