Henry Sauerbier (1822-1886) was a German born businessman in Newark, New Jersey, and received a contract for field grade and presentation swords during the Civil War, but his production was very limited making examples like this desirable. It has a curved blade measuring 32 inches straight from the tip to the hilt with acanthus and patriotic etching, "H. Sauerbier/Newark/NJ" etched on the left ricasso, and "iron proof" etched on the spine. The gilt brass hilt has floral designs and a twisted brass wire wrapped black leather grip. Includes a gilt iron scabbard.

Very good with silver-gray patina, distinct etching, and small patches of mild pitting on the blade; traces of gilt finish on the hilt along with nice aged patina on the balance, moderate wear on the grip including some loose wire, and general mild overall wear. The scabbard has traces of gold in the protected areas and otherwise a dark mottled brown patina.
