Description:

Manufactured in 1978 and subsequently refinished and upgraded by Frank Klay. The barrel shows a band of wavy line engraving at the breech as well as floral scroll engraving on the sides surrounding the logo of the United States Merchant Marine Academy on the left and an anchor and rope motif on the right. The frame displays near full coverage floral scroll with rope accents on the recoil shield as well as Frank Klay's signature "K" stamp below the serial number. The hammer is engraved with a dragon's head motif. The gripstrap is inscribed "Acta Non Verba" or "Deeds Not Words", the motto of the United States Merchant Marine Academy. The consignor attributes the engraving to Alvin A. White, which is certainly within the realm of possibility given the quality of the work. The wood case has a shield shaped plaque engraved with the United States Merchant Marine Academy logo as well as a banner reading "A.M.", containing a martial themed powder flask, "L" shaped combination tool, dual cavity "Colt's Patent" bullet mould, several balls and conical projectiles, two paper cartridges, Eley Bros. cap tin, and an extra cylinder numbered to the gun. All accessories are stamped with the same "K" stamp as the revolver indicating they were finished by Klay as well. Includes a protective sleeve for the case with label reading "From the/Colt Custom/Gun Shop.../The Klay-Colt 1851 Navy/Early Third Model/A very limited edition of 150/& a special engraved edition of 50."

Rating Definition:

Excellent as professionally finished by Frank Klay, retaining 99% plus blue and silver finishes and case colors with slight softening to the barrel address and spare cylinder scene, an attractive dark aged patina on the silver, and crisp engraving. Mechanically excellent. Case is very fine with some light storage and handling marks as well as patina on the lid plaque. All accessories are very fine with light storage and handling marks. This is a rare opportunity to own a highly regarded Frank Klay upgraded 1851 Navy reissue.
